What are all the essential grooming tools to keep a longhair looking nice? I'm not having any problems or anything I just wanted to know so that I could get the tools needed. Thanks!
Re: Longhair
I have a rather extensive grooming kit, but if I had to take it down to the bare essentials, I'd say, a stripping knife (and the right type!) is essential, particularly in the spring. I use a pin-brush, then a boar bristle brush, I have a grooming stone for stripping out the legs if needed and the top of the head if they get fuzzies there, I have two types of thinning shear (one that takes a lot, and one that takes a little bit), a pair of scissors for quick trims on the top of my pet feet (I use the thinning shears for the show dogs and I still suck at that) and a small shaver for the bottom of their feet. Biggest thing though is the dremel. I honestly could not live without it. I HATE cutting nails and I'd be paying through the nose for a groomer to do it if it weren't for the dremel. I do their nails weekly most of the time this way. I also have several combs that I use all the time. One is a flea comb (great for the furnishings on the legs) and the other is a two sided one with wider teeth on one side than the other. And of course, sprays. I've learned from some setter people that you should never brush a dirty coat, and you should always spray it lightly so it's slightly damp before you brush also to avoid breakage.
