Can ear infections be treated with an ear cleaning solution or does it need to be cured with medication prescribed by a vet?

Also, what are the ear cleaning solutions you guys use? Thanks!

First you need to determine if it is a yeast or mites!! Then there are some other remedies to cure it. But it is best to have a vet check it.......then you can treat it. Solutions just helps prevent issues...it won't cure them!! Ivermectin I believe will cure some problems with a drop in each ear and prevent them!

I love Vet Solution ear cleanser, works great & smells good. The alcohol/vinegar solution 50/50 is also what our vet recommends, but the other just smells so wonderful Wink

If it's infected, ask your vet for BNT ointment it's amazing..most vets don't know about it, but they are learning quickly. IT's amazing on those infections.

I use tresaderm. To be honest it cures yeast, bacterial infections, ear mites, and is also an anti inflammatory and its numbing too and that helps with the soreness. Sometimes this is the only thing i have found to get rid of chronic ear infection or chronic mites...its good stuff.. You gotta get it from your vet though and its about 15.00 a bottle.

Description:
Dermatologic Solution TRESADERM® (thiabendazole, dexamethasone, neomycin sulfate solution) contains the following active ingredients per mL: 40 mg thiabendazole, 1 mg dexamethasone, 3.2 mg neomycin (from neomycin sulfate). Inactive ingredients: glycerin, propylene glycol, purified water, hypophosphorous acid, calcium hypophosphite; about 8.5% ethyl alcohol and about 0.5% benzyl alcohol.
TRESADERM Indications

Dermatologic Solution TRESADERM is indicated as an aid in the treatment of certain bacterial, mycotic, and inflammatory dermatoses and otitis externa in dogs and cats. Both acute and chronic forms of these skin disorders respond to treatment with TRESADERM. Many forms of dermatosis are caused by bacteria (chiefly Staphylococcus aureus, Proteus vulgaris and Pseudomonas aeruginosa). Moreover, these organisms often act as opportunistic or concurrent pathogens that may complicate already established mycotic skin disorders, or otoacariasis caused by Otodectes cynotis. The principal etiologic agents of dermatomycoses in dogs and cats are species of the genera Microsporum and Trichophyton. The efficacy of neomycin as an antibacterial agent, with activity against both gram-negative and gram-positive pathogens, is well documented. Detailed studies in various laboratories have verified the significant activity thiabendazole displays against the important dermatophytes. Dexamethasone, a synthetic adrenocorticoid steroid, inhibits the reaction of connective tissue to injury and suppresses the classic inflammatory manifestations of skin disease. The formulation for TRESADERM combines these several activities in a complementary form for control of the discomfort and direct treatment of dermatitis and otitis externa produced by the above-mentioned infectious agents.

Topical Treatments: At Least Ten Days Usage

Another approach involves the use of a prescription topical ear medication called Tresaderm (manufactured by Merial) that contains an antibiotic for any secondary bacterial infections, a cortisone derivative for the inflammation, and thiabendazole to kill yeasts and mites. This is an excellent ear product and is able to kill the developing mite eggs. This cuts the treatment course down to 10 to 14 days and provides an excellent oily lubricant with which to clean the ears as well. This product has been favored by veterinarians for decades; still, it is no longer state of the art.

Even if it isn't state of the art it still works and works great...my Gracie i have been fighting her ears for two months now with ivermectin for mites and a cream the doctor gave me for infection....i went to get my tresaderm out of the fridge...it has expired by one year...and started using that. She finally isn't tilting her head or digging her ears and her ears do not hurt now when i treat them..Thank you lord for Tresaderm.
