Had a buyer back out!?

How many of you have ever had a buyer back out of a puppy after you have held it for someone? I am just really curious to see the answers to this question.......I will explain my reasoning later!!!
I also want to add....if you have ever backed out of a puppy for one reason or another.......yes or no!!

I've had this happen several times over the years all for different reasons. Only a couple of them had already paid a deposit though, most of them say they will send it and then a day or two later say they changed their mind or whatever.

Ok I will explain.......As you all know, I backed out of 3 puppies recently. The one person is having a coniption fit over it and saying that NO ONE does this....and if you do this, you will be highly disrespected in the breeding world. I just want to know how many people have been on the receiving end and have had to do this themselves. You don't have to give explanations.....just vote. This person claims to have been breeding for 5 plus yrs and has never had this happen to her before. I just want to prove to her that it happens all the time everyday......that is part of life and.....let's face it.....crap happens!! I have had people back out of waiting lists, deposits and promises so many times that I try to not sweat it. Life happens!!
If you wish to explain or give your opinions they will be respected......no matter what! This is a LEARNING forum and I want people to learn!!

Karen, I look at it this way. I would MUCH rather you tell me before you got the puppy that something has come up in your life and you're not in a position to take the puppy, than to have you take the puppy and then end up in a situation where you're immediately rehoming it. I'd rather have to keep the puppy a little longer myself and have it go straight to it's permanent home. I've never had to back out on a purchase or had anyone back out myself (well, I had to return a deposit, but that was because the puppy wasn't healthy enough to go home and I didn't want to leave the buyer hanging forever), but as you know, I don't have a lot of experience with it, and I'm sure at some point I will. I would HOPE that I would have sympathy if something happened beyond the buyers control. If she's keeping your deposit, then that's payment enough for her inconvenience, and she's not entitled to harp on you about your changed circumstance-she needs to get over it and find the puppy another home.

I have to agree with you Proud Lake. I have had people back out on me (not often) but it does and will happen at some point in time. I had a lady buy 2 pups from me (gave a discount for buying them both), and then just after they turned a year old she decided they were too much for her and got rid of them. I found this out after the fact. We had even discussed the pros and cons of getting and taking care of 2.
things do happen and we can't always control them.

I've never backed out on a puppy, but then again I've only ever bought 3 (2 from Karen, and Reuben from NC)...well 4 if you count Hollie's mom. Anyways, I think its responsible of people to let you know that they arn't ready for a puppy. I've had lots of people back out from my waiting lists, and then a couple that told me they weren't ready for a puppy right now but to keep them notified with future litters. I've never had a person back out of buying a puppy once they had already placed a deposit, but I do tend to have problems with people telling me they sent deposits and then lying about it which is just RUDE in my opinion. I seem to get at least one person that does that with every litter. I've also had no shows before that say they want to come look at a puppy and then fail to show up...I have someone coming to look at a puppy tomorrow and I hope this isn't the case this time

I have had this happen to me (this last week actually and I never even got a call even though we had scheduled a date/time for delivery) and have also had to back out of a puppy I was planning on getting. The breeder was very nice though, never really complained, just explained that I would lose my deposit, which I knew that already. I also had one breeder one time that I was going to get a puppy, paid the deposit and then things came up out of my control. We talked it over and she was fine with waiting on payments even though it was not quite on the schedule we had worked out before. She also offered, if I wanted to wait, to just transfer my deposit/payments to a pup out of a future litter when things would be a little easier on me. I thought that was wonderful of her when she could have just said, make the payment now or lose the pup and money. She actually told me to not feel obligated to take the puppy if things weren't where I could at that time.

Luckily most of the breeder's I've worked with have been super nice and very understanding if things come up!! And I agree with the comment, that I would rather someone back out on a pup than buy one and then immediately rehome it.

It does happen often...people change their minds or something comes up...It's part of raising dogs,nothing is ever for sure(til the dog is home)And that's not even a set thing(they can change their mind and bring it back)...

I had to back out of a waiting list recently..A puppy I was waiting for was born...BUT I had a puppy I wanted to keep back born here first....So,not something I planned...It just happened that way..And I still felt aweful about it!
