Nugget JR
Nugget Jr is in his 1st show next weekend July 29th & 30th to see what kind of potential he has in the ring. I know his coat is a bit washed out from the sun......any advice on what I can buy to bathe him with to help put that red back in his coat without drying it out????
He is now out of the sun til I can get his coat back in shape and if he does ok at the show he will be in an all shaded pen from now on.....LOL!!! Oh and he is a shaded red dapple!!

Re: Nugget JR
Try a stripping knife first. The washed out hair is most likely dead and most of it should come out with a good stripping. Don't forget, long even strokes with the knife close to flat against the dog. Anything around the top of his head or legs you can use a stone on to get out. Once you get it stripped out you can use Chris Christensen's Red on Red shampoo. It's not perfect, but it does help. I use Black on Black for my girls-they both get a lot of red in their ears from the sun. It doesn't take it completely away, but it's less noticeable.

Re: Nugget JR
I would try burnished bronze shampoo(I think that's what it's called anyway) for red/and chocolate dogs!It helps a lot to bring out natural colors!
Im new to show and i go with what I like(over what others say is "correct"),but overall he looks very well put together! I think he will do great!

Re: Nugget JR
I guess I should add that he will be 1 yrs old next month!
I think he has short ears, nice stop, nice head atleast the kind I like, seems to have nice ribbing and keel, nice topline, I like his rear and his front, nice chest and I might be to bias cause I just love him and I know he is BIG, so I need someone to help point out his flaws to me!! He is showing tomorrow and he is getting evaluated but I was hoping to be prepared for what I will hear....LMBO!!!
I looked all over for shampoo today, red or brown or whatever and could only find black & white....LOL!!! I will buy some at the show maybe!!!

Re: Nugget JR
You need to shave his neck. With the weather being like it has been, a lot of dogs don't have coat, but if you shave his neck, his chest will pop more. Here, I'm borrowing your pictures and I'll show you where I mean. Don't use the plain blade-use a comb on it, so you don't put holes in his coat this close to his show!
Shave in the area where I've got that "U" shape. I also put two dots where the dimples are-you need to thin the hair there just a bit so the dimples are obvious to the judge.
On his rear, take thin the pants down on the outside so they aren't so heavy. They hide his rear and it needs to be more visible.
On his front legs, in front of the furnishings, take your stripping knife and be ruthless. Anything that sticks out has to go. Otherwise, they'll make him look out at the elbow. Also, you need to take thinning shears around the tops of his ears, right at the skull and clean that up a bit.
If you have some finishing spray, put that on him to weigh down the hair a bit. You'll know next time, you should bathe him a few days before a show so his coat will settle a bit. It'll look better on Sunday than Saturday! Good luck! Let us know how he does.

Re: Nugget JR
Ack, maybe I misunderstood. I thought you wanted help with the grooming! Sorry!
What you can expect to hear tomorrow. The two biggest faults that jump out at me is that he's very short in upper arm, and he's got flat and splayed front feet. He has more stop than I personally like, and his ears are a little short, though if he gets some coat, that'll be hidden. Otherwise, he's very nice-lovely topline, nice transition from neck to shoulder, nice length of neck (he's a cream carrier, right?), layback is maybe a little steep, but not bad, and he's got plenty of prosternum. Keel and ribbing look good to me, rear looks pretty good. If he was in coat right now, he'd do very well. You might have some judges that won't put him up with the lack of coat, but again, it's not an uncommon problem right now.

You know what, his color looks okay. With him being a dapple, the variations in color just look like dappling. I wouldn't worry too much about it for right now. Just try to keep him out of the sun or a sun protector on him going forward.
Re: Nugget JR
I am keeping him in now and crating him but taking him out and running him so I will look into coat protector anyways!!
I DID want help grooming him...LOL....so that is absolutely GREAT what you did for me and thank you so very much!!!
UGHHHH....I have actually been using a slicker on him and taking out all his undercoat......shoot....he had tons of coat and I thought he had tooo much.......UGHHH!!! LOL!!!
How do I fix his front feet???? Walk him on rocks??

Re: Nugget JR
Unfortunately, at this age, his feet probably are what they are. If you'd caught it when he was still a puppy, vitamin C can tighten up the ligaments and fix the feet problem assuming it's not genetic and he wasn't born that way. (You should give doses of vitamin c to your puppies when they are teething-you'll constantly see them going down in the pasterns, their feet flattening and various other ligament related issues during teething that Vit. C helps with.)
I wouldn't worry about the slicker-he's shedding from the heat, so it would have come out no matter what you used. Like I said before you groomed him, it was dead coat and had to come out to grow in the new and shiny. It's just part of the process-it'll come back:-) Just let anyone evaluating him know that he just blew his coat-they've all been through it. You just want to maximize what he has left since he's going in the ring. And weirdly, the way to maximize is to remove more, lol.

Re: Nugget JR
Thanks again Kathleen for all the help!! Linda was able to take a bunch more off of him at the show before & after he went in!
He won his class beating out a gorgeous standard! Then Harley took Reserve over all!!! It was a good day and a fun day!!!
Everyone liked him and said he was a nice boy.....just need to work with him more and practice more and keep entering him in small shows for the experience! I asked if I should sell him and she said no....Linda that handled him is Wini's breeder.....LOL!!! So she is gonna show him for awhile for me here and there and I am gonna show him too!
The red/brown conditioner we found was $23.00 for 8oz.....no way was I spending that....LOL! I bought a nice big bottle of finishing spray tho with sunscreen in it for him! Everyone loved his dappled coat!

Re: Nugget JR
Oh good! Glad it was a good experience for you. Yeah, the shampoos aren't cheap. I do think they sell something similar for humans though (shampoos for specific color hair), so you might want to check in the people aisle at the drug store too.
Re: Nugget JR
Congrats! Sounds like you had lots of fun!
Wow,that's a lot!..LOL..I think I payed something like $10 bucks for small concentrated bottle...

Re: Nugget JR
All the others were priced around $13-19 but he said that one was $23.......I paid $16 for the conditioning spray which wasn't bad!
