I'm trying to do a personal study on Demodectic mange. If you have had experience with this and would like to share your story, please e-mail your story over. I'd like to know about all cases adults & pups. P.S. if you happen to have pictures, please include them with a letter of release for educational purposes.

Searching for information on all:

ages
breeds
treatments
recommended shampoos
etc....

I'd also like to share a new treatment some vets are not aware of at the moment and it's By Promeris http://www.promeris.com/demodectic.html - I hope this information may help some.

I'd love to know all the treatments.you may have tried with your pet - what was succesful, what was not, what side effects your baby may have experienced.

For those that send information over, Thank you in advance.

I will try to share some of the replies/treatments with everyone as we collect data. Thank you in advance for everyones willgness to share their stories.

The below are some treatment options individuals have been given or the owners have done personal research and tried the below methods:

Goodwin ointment
Promeris
Mitaban
Lime Dip
Nu-Stock from Tractor Supply
Option to not treat at all and let the puppies immune system work naturally with an added holistic vitamin to help boost the immune system.

I would like to add: It seems most pets with this are usually puppies diagnosed from a juvenile state in life or rescues under a stressful situation. It appears the majority of the puppies don't have a problem with this as they reach adulthood, if diagnosed with a localized cases.

I would also like to add: Most clients have responded that when they took their pet to the vet:

They are not given all the above treatment options
The majority of the clients were only given 1/2 options on how this can be treated
No clients were told it could go away on it's own - one advocate for natural health put their puppy on a holistic vitamin to boost the immune sytem.
The majority of the treatments have been lime dip so far.
One client has tried 3 of the above options and is still searching avenues for a solution.

Not sure if there are any connections to color, but so far the majority of the cases are Black/Tan pets - probably because we have more Black/Tan pets in America Smile who knows, but I found it interesting.Still researching about Demodex as it seems rescues are prone to it Sad I'd also like to add i found an inexpensive place to order Promeris at this time 09/2010. Next year another company may be cheaper. I also stumbled across a post where another individual used lemons for this.

Quote:
Take 1 cup water, boil, take off and add one sliced lemon. The next day take the lemons out and apply to any areas that are affected by demodex. Within four weeks she was completely back to normal.

Promeris has now been approved for the treament of DEMODECTIC - this will sure beat lyme dips if it's as successful as promised. http://www.promeris.com/demodectic.htmlor http://www.promeris.com/pdf/promeris_mange_demodex_detail.pdf

At this time a company called MAAK is fairly inexpensive for Promeris. http://www.maakenterprises.com/category_s/1.htm

I did order from the ABOVE COMPANY AND GOT THE PRODUCT IN. I'm always hesitant about trying other countries. But it was a 30.00 savings, so i gave them a whirl Smile

I have read lemon works and also that it does not. Unfortunately, I have never tried it, so i cannot verify on that one.

P.S. the 3 rescued dogs we have tried demodex on... it worked Smile wish more vets offered it as an option, it's very very economical compared to their pricey Lyme dips. It does have high reported cases of dogs having adverse side effects from it, so weigh your treatment options. I have used it on rescue puppies and it cleared up their demodex sites and made a visable difference within a week. I have also used it on an adult long coat female dachshund who became quite lethargic her first day and was running around the next.

Demodectic mange is not an inherited condition, but the suppressed immune system that allows the puppy to be susceptible to the mites can be. Remember that all puppies receive the mites from their mother, but only a few have ineffective immune systems and develop the mange. This sensitivity can be passed genetically through generations. Individuals that have a history of demodectic mange, and their parents and siblings, should not be bred. Through careful breeding, most cases of generalized demodicosis could be eliminated.

I'd like to point out the above which is found @ http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?c=2+2109&aid=729

you will see this is not an inherited trait...most make the mistake of saying it's inherited, but in all actuality it's the weaken immune system trait that can be inherited which opens the door to not only demodex but several other conditions, that is why it's not recommended to breed a dog that throws puppies with weakened immune systems.

It's also important to know whether you are dealing with

Generalized most likely inherited from a weak immune system disorder

or If it is a localized case not genetic

please feel free to correct any inaccurate data or links with updated field studies Smile always open to the doors of continued education.

I will look back through some of my records. We had an EB who had this as a puppy, never resurfaced as an adult but was also allergic to corn and fleas. He had to be on allergy meds yr round. Luckily I do remember that they were human OTC allergy meds and he took one a day, lol!!

We are going over to our old house today and that's were his folder is with his vet records including the shampoo we used on him. I do know that one of the shampoos (he had 2, depending on his skin condition) was Nova Pearls. Will look at the other one and let ya know!
