Buyer to Pay Late Litter Registration Fee? Empty Buyer to Pay Late Litter Registration Fee?

Post  Angelboys3 Tue Dec 28, 2010 11:09 am

Ok, I have just been browsing some doxie sites looking for one or two males to replace what I have. Even though it will be a couple months before I buy (gotta pay off the last girls first, lol) I have contacted one or two breeders just to get a feel for them and see what they may have coming up. One in particular kinda made me wonder about something she said. She was telling me about what she had now and what she had coming, then mentioned a boy she had that was 9 months old, a choc based cream. She told me his price for full AKC and then went on to tell me that she had never registered his litter so it would be another $100 to do it, but I should be ok with that since it was still a good price for a cream. I know this sounds silly, but I would have rather she added that into the "full AKC" price to begin with than to tell me he is X amount of dollars for full AKC but another 100 to actually have those papers. Anyway, just had to vent a little, lol!

How bizarre. I didn't pay AKC to get the certified pedigrees on my girls, but I have the registration certificates and can provide a pedigree for both parents. And if I chose not to register a litter and someone wanted full AKC, I'd either eat the late registration fee myself or include it in the full AKC price. I wouldn't be tacky enough to admit that I'm making someone else pay for my laziness/cheapness.

Yeah it really turned me off on the whole idea of purchasing from her, plus this is what I got when I asked about conformation and if she evaluated her puppies/dogs or had someone do it.

"I haven't had my dogs evaluated. I have over the years weeded out faults and gotten in dogs from kennels with good bloodlines, good pedigrees and good conformation. So right now I feel like I am producing some really nice dogs with nice temperaments."
Shocked No
I was like, ummm ok.... All dogs have faults, just some worse than others

I actually contacted a show breeder about purchasing a male from him, I got almost the exact same response, but his response was more like : I show & my dogs win. I don't need to test Sad i was so frustrated and he acted offended when i ask if he would mind running a few test before I purchased a dog ;(. Needless to say, I didn't buy a male from him.

I found a similar response when I asked about Cord1 PRA testing when I was looking for a stud. There is real resistance out there to testing in general and my suspicion is that some breeders don't want to put their reputation on the line. On the other hand, some people were very willing, so you never know until you try, I guess. I do find annoying the insistance that X dog doesn't have any faults. You're right, ALL dogs have faults, even if they're minor.

I'd like to also add, Faults are o.k. There is no utopia dog, the majority all have some flaw one way or another, it's just that testing helps give a general direction to go in. I truly don't feel that pulling every dog that has issues is the way to go, but it sure helps when selecting a compatible mate Smile. To pull or not pull a dog from a program is the program owners personal choice. To buy or not buy from a program is the buyers choice. But, I do believe all known health issues should be shared when looking at a potential breeding dog, just because you don't test does not mean there are not underlying issues. Hmm, I feel like I'm rambling, but i hope it makes sense???

I completely agree, Sherry! Some issues can crop up recessively, and if you aren't aware they're in the line, you can't avoid bad matchups with that particular issue. Honesty is the best policy-nobody wants major defects showing up in their puppies, so even if that particular dog doesn't have the issue, if a littermate does, or a parent, it should be disclosed for the sake of everyone involved. It doesn't mean tossing the dog, but like with anything, you want to avoid doubling up on a problem.
