Question

Can you give a pregnant mama tape worm meds? Can tapes effect the puppies? Something I have been pondering and have yet to run across anything on this!

You know I was just thinking the same thing the other day, and would also be interested to know. Its time for me to give all the dogs a dose of Panacur....but with Taffy pregnant I didn't want to risk giving it to her.

Panacur is fine. I gave Millie Panacur daily from day 52 until 3 days after whelp and that worked beautifully for me. The tapeworm meds, on the other hand, I don't know. I'd probably call your vet to find out if the medicine is considered safe for pregnant and nursing mothers. The Panacur is labeled for use in pregnant and nursing dogs.

Yes I knew Panacur could be giving cause I dose all my pregnant moms 2 wks before delivery for 3 days and 2 wks after delivery for 3 days.

Kathleen......so you give it to your moms for 2 wks straight or is that just 7 days straight.....LOL....pain killers aren't letting me think real straight....LOL!!!!

It was two weeks straight. I never saw even a hint of worms in the puppies, either. I still wormed them and Millie every two weeks, of course, but I was pretty happy with that regimen. It wasn't particularly expensive with the Panacur horse paste I used, and it worked beautifully.

I think tapeworm meds are not safe for the preggos...Best to wait til puppies are born..Or if your vet suggest it anyway...I think the later in pregnancy the better(for any medication)
